As a business professional, entrepreneur or community
volunteer, you will eventually have to stand-up and
give a presentation in front of an audience. The majority
of our population would prefer to be doing anything
but standing in front of a group and speaking. Why?
Because we have a fear of failure, fear of looking silly
and the fear of rejection from either our peers or strangers.
These 3-steps to your BestPresentation will help
you give a great presentation every time with minimal
nervousness.
1) Craft your speech:
Know your topic and purpose. Always keep the big picture
in the forefront of your mind while preparing the
details of your speech. I always write my topic and
purpose on a sheet of paper and tape it to a wall
in front of me. This way, I can ensue that I stay
with the topic and purpose intended.
2) Rehearsal:
Practice, Practice, Practice. After you have narrowed
down your outline to a workable few words or phrases
which will trigger your thoughts, then and only then
should you begin rehearsing your speech. Practice
your speech (out loud) over and over again until you
feel that you have a good comfort level with the information.
Each time you say it, try to mix it up a bit by saying
it differently. This way, you don't sound scripted.
Remember, you are not trying to memorize your speech,
but rather you are delivering a speech that sounds
conversational.
3) Delivery:
Fight off the nerves. You have thoroughly completed
steps 1 and 2 so your nerves should be somewhat in
check. Begin slowly breathing in and out - 5 seconds
in and 5 full seconds out. Do this several times but
try not to be too obvious. Also, this is a good time
to start visualizing yourself giving your speech and
doing really well.
